Bodrum, the ancient name of which was Halikamassos, is the center of The Blue Voyage. There are hundreds of yachts in Bodrum Limani. Some of these yachts provide daily tours in the area, and some of them sail and stay in the sea for many days. The yachts which leave Bodrum on the Blue Voyage generally pass Gokova Korfezi and Marmaris and sail on to Fethiye and Antalya. Some of the them sail to the Aegean.
Yachts approach Bodrum Limani directly
at night and in the day time. The harbour and breakwaters are just to the West of the castle. When approaching the harbour at night, you can use Kargi Adasi, Karaada and Dikilitas, lighthouses. Once closer in, you can see the lights of the castle and breakwaters. Care is needed with the Dikilitas, reef. The entrance of the harbour is narrow, and the traffic is heavy. After entering the harbour, head towards the marina where mooring i.s possible except for big yachs. Anchoring in the open is not suitable. However, gulets and other Turkish commercial ships can use the quay of the harbour.
The marina provides all-round shelter. During strong Southerlies, the Southern part may not be very comfortable. Yachts can winter in the marina. There are several craft production and maintenance sites available
around Bodrum, mostly located in the Southeast, in Icmeler region, 3 km away.
The History Of Bodrum
According to Heredot, Halikarnassos was established by Lelegs in 200 BC. Later, Dors, Carians, Persians, Greeks, Mikens, Romans, and Byzantines, respectively, lived in this area. The Turks occupied the city in the 13th century.
Mousoleon
One of the oldest places of Bodrum is Mausoleon. Halikarnassos was the capital ol Caria. When the mayor of the city King Mausolos (377-353 BC) died, his wife and sister Artemisia had a mausoleum built for him. This mausoleum was so beautiful that it was considered one of the seven wonders ofrhe world. However, the statues of Artemisia ind Mausolos were unfortunately later taken to the British Museum. The panel with sratue, one ol the pieces of Mauseleon is exhibited at Bodrum Underwater Archaeological Museum.
Bodrum Castle
The Knights of Saint John from Rhodes established Bodrum Castle in 1415. Kanuni Sultan Siileyman later took this castle, in j 522, from the knights during his Rhodes campaign.
The castle has been the symbol of Bodrum for many years. Today there are several shops, a tower and a world famous
underwater museum inside it.
Antique Theater
'he Antique Theater is 2 km away from the castle. It belongs to the Hellenistic period and its capacity is 13000 people. Today several festivals are organised there. There are hundreds of Roman graves behind the antique theater.
Bodrum Nights
Nightlife in Bodrum i.s very lively and wonderful. There arc many bars and
discos for entertainment which are open until
the early hours of the morning.
okova Korfezi is one of the most wonderful places in the world. In the North, there are mountains as tall as 1000 m, and in the South there are very beautiful bays where the forests hug the shoreline. The many shades of blue and green here have a deep effect on visitors. Words are insufficient to describe the scene. The bay looks amazing, especially in the morning before the sun rises. There are flying fish on the sea. First the sea looks silver, and during the sunrise, the colour of the sea turns to gold. After the sun rises, ail the shades of blue and green can be seen. The sea completely wakes up around 10 o'clock. The wind blows from the West to the East.
Gokova Korfezi starts from HOseyin Burnu in Bodrum Yanmadasi and continues down to
Gokova town in the Easternmost part of the gulf, a distance of about 60 nautical miles. Knidos in the South is the last point of the bay. There are 12 nautical miles between Bodrum and Knidos. The depth of the sea in Gokova is sometimes as deep as an ocean, That's why, 28 types of fish, which normally survive only in oceans, can be seen in Gokova.
There are a lot of historical remains under the sea and on the shore. The histoiy of Knidos dates back 3000 years. Dors and Ions lived there in 800 BC. According to Dr. Ender Vannhoglu's doctorate thesis, Lelegs settled in Cokertme and Oren regions in 1200-1300 BC. and later Carians lived there. In various parts of the gulf, there are many ancient remains from the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
Therefore, Gokova has great importance not only because of its natural beauty, but also because of its historical and archaeological characteristics. Gokova has a special meaning for Voyagers. The most important settlement area in Gokova Korfezi is Bodrum. Yachts generally start the Blue Voyage from this city. For this reason we will introduce Gokova Korfezi from Karaada, a town right after Bodrum
