Çıralı Limanı

Çıralı Limanı
36°17'8N, 20°29'E
This is a natural bay in the West of Antalya Körfezi, and is surrounded by Yöremeci Burnu and Kara Burun, it is exposed to Easterlies and Northeasterlies and is just 2 nautical miles North-Northwest of Ceneviz limanı. The long beach on the \Vestern side is easily visible. Its beauty is well worth seeing. Çıralı is an important bay because it is elose to the ancient city of Olympos and Chimaera. Ancient Olympos lies on the slopes behind Çıralı village and the ancient ruins of Chimaera on the slopes about 1 mile inland from the Northern end of the beach.

According to documents, Olympos city, founded in the Hellenistic period, remained under the control of pirates for a long time. The city is based on both sides of a valley created by a river which starts like a narrow channel, then widens and then narrows again. Most of the remaining structures are under dense plant cover. The majör ancient ruins are as follows: the channel regulating the stream bed and the bridge above, the theatre, temple, bath, agora, palaestra, gymnasium and necropolis. The church and castle ruins belong to the Middle Ages. After about an hour's walk from the settlement known todayas Çıralı, you can reach chimaera, the self-burning fires, 250 m above sea level. The external fires here are attributed to the leakage of natural gases from the eaıth
