Yedi Burunlar

Yedi Burunlar
36°32'3N, 29°03'9E
Yedi Burunlar is a coastal üne starting with Kötü Burnu 9 nautical miles South of Ölüdeniz, stretching in a South-Southeast direetion and ending with Zeytin Burnu. The effeet of the wind, turning back from these high and steep capes, can even be felt off the sea. Therefore, it is better to go to Kalkan and just watch these capes and the famous Patara beach in its South (7 miles long) from 2-3 miles off. Most boats leave Kalkan in the very early hours of the morning to pass this hard route easily. But even at these hours it is a tıring journey.

Patara was the port of Xanthos, which was the capital of Lycian civilization. Ho\vever, the şilt, dragged by Eşen stream över time, both created Patara beach, and caused the ancient city and the port to be buried by sand dunes.
With a moderate meltem wind it is possible to see gulets which have anchored in the cove under Kötü Burun. The cove is quite deep.
Today, a modern town called Gelemiş/Ovagelemiş, just outside the ancient city, can be found. Accommodation is provided and other needs can be met here.
Patara, one of the oldest and most important ports of Lycia, was önce named Pttara. it became famous for being the birth place of Artemis, Apollo and St. Nicholas. Indeed, its port made Patara so important. The port, 1600 m long and 400 m wide, was used till the end of the Byzantine period, and then turned into a marslı because of the sand dunes.
it is quite difficult to recognize the city which is scattered över a large area. The monumental gate, theatre, agora, a few temples, the batlı, granaries and the necropolis area consisting of sarcophagi are the ruins to be visited.
